Board of Directors goes on a Retreat
|
To keep the Trophia Butterfly
Foundation moving in a positive
and creative direction, the board met
for a retreat/brainstorming session led
by Vice President Jimmy Olson to air
ideas and suggestions aimed at the fine
tuning of TTBF's overall mission,
objectives and strategies. A synopsis is
reported here so that our supporters
can be kept abreast of TTBF growth
and progress. Thirteen currently
ongoing projects were reviewed as
well as future project possibilities, and
the following five key topics were
discussed:
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
Consensus was that criteria for the
evaluation of future projects be:
A. consider scope and types of
gardens - flower, plants, trees, etc.
B. do design only
C. maintenance requirements and
funding for all projects
D. expense
E. ease of implementation
F. educational potential
G. partnering with other non-profits
H. public access and support
I. life span potential
PROJECT MAINTENANCE
It was overwhelmingly agreed that this
was a critical area of concern and that
monies should be budgeted to support
the project for a minimum of one year.
This funding can come from TTBF or
the host of the project or partnering
with other not for profit groups. What
constituted maintenance was
discussed and how manpower would
be supplied
was also examined, it was agreed that the
brunt of maintenance could not come
from the board members themselves
although there are board members and
others who volunteer time for such
work. Major maintenance must come
from funding.
BOARD COMPOSITION
This is an area of particular importance
with the discussion centering on the
board's particular strengths and weak-
nesses and how to identify those who
would complement and supplement its
current structure. Criteria for becoming a
board member and the obligations that go
with board membership were also
examined.
FUNDRAISING
Always a major concern. Membership
contribution, grants, annual solicitation,
partnerships and special events were all
discussed at length.
MISSION STATEMENT
It was agreed that The Trophia Butterfly
Foundation's mission statement still is
viable but that "sustainability" should be
added to the statement (which can be
found on page 2 of this newsletter).
Lastly, committees were established to
discuss, refine and implement the
foundation's objectives. The retreat was
enlightening and stimulating and
illustrated the unique and proud role
TTBF plays in the community. It was
also agreed that we must always keep
our supporters, who share this pride,
informed of our activities as they deserve
to see the results of their generous
donations and participation.
